The AFLW Dreamtime match will return to Darwin in 2026

The AFLW Dreamtime match, delivered in partnership with Tourism and Events NT, will return to Darwin in 2026, with Richmond and Essendon once again set to meet at TIO Stadium as part of Round 3.
The fixture, which had been played exclusively in Melbourne until its historic move to the Northern Territory in 2024, will feature in the opening week of Indigenous Round celebrations. The game has quickly become a standout moment on the AFLW calendar and continues to highlight the Territory’s capability to host major national sporting events and attract fans from around the country.
Returning for a third consecutive year, the match has firmly established itself as a key cultural showcase, bringing top‑level women’s football together with a powerful celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. The first NT Dreamtime match in 2024 ended in a draw, followed by Essendon’s 15‑point win in 2025, adding further anticipation to this year’s clash.
The fixture continues to deepen connections with communities across the Top End, providing meaningful opportunities for AFLW players to engage with young Territorians through school visits, community clinics and cultural activities that promote positive role models and encourage participation in sport.
Richmond and Essendon have reaffirmed their enthusiasm for returning to the Territory, acknowledging the strong support from local fans and the importance of building on the cultural and community impact of the Dreamtime fixture. The match has become a valued opportunity for both clubs to connect with supporters in the NT and to showcase elite women’s football on a national stage.
August is shaping up to be a major month of supported events in the Territory, with the Dreamtime match joining the return of international test cricket to Darwin for the first time in 22 years, as Australia takes on Bangladesh at Marrara Stadium from 13- 17 August. Together, these fixtures reinforce the NT’s growing reputation as a highly sought after tourism destination with world‑class sporting experiences.
These events play a vital role in strengthening the Territory’s visitor economy and supporting local businesses. For more information about the Event Funding Program, visit tourismandeventsnt.com.au.
